Toddled down to the Green Living Show on Sunday. Lots of yummy food, mostly organic...best coffee I ever had! It's funny how Green has taken off; a few years ago this show was very "grass roots" (no pun intended) It was quite small consisting mostly of local farmers. I was astonished how much green we have in our local communities. At my mosaic class, I had received a free ticket from Carol Anne who is the owner of Ontario's Own. These are people living out their dream. A number of years ago, they sold their home in Leaside and bought a trailer park outside of Toronto. I suspect this is what sustains their Ontario's Own business. Their products include soups, stocks, purees (apple, pear, peach) and jarred chillis. It's enterprising. They contact local farmers and only use their product for their jarred goods. When we first met Carol Anne last week, she was in the throws of being accepted to appear on the incredibly popular show, Dragon's Den. I hope she does well either by way of money from the Dragons or from promotion. She's an enthusiastic gal who loves her business but if the show and her phone ringing is any testament, it's a lot of really hard work. I saw a number of Dragon Den recipients at the show-kudos to all.
The food tasting was great; local shops and restauranteurs cooked for you. You purchased 5 tickets for $10.00 and then presented either one or two at the cooking kiosk. We calculated it was a bit pricey, but sampling is always fun. My particular favourite? Beet salad with goat cheese. MMMMM. I wish I could invent something and hop on the Green Gravy train. Alas, my area of expertise only extends to art and real estate. Not sure yet how to incorporate those things!
